A Message from Mrs. Murphy...

Welcome to Harding Elementary School! My name is Kathleen Murphy, and I am proud to have been serving as Harding School Principal since August of 2005. I consider it an honor to work with such a wonderful school community filled with talented and dedicated staff as well as supportive families.

My favorite part of being the Principal at Harding is the time I spend with the students every day.  Truly, seeing our students learn and grow in our classrooms is an amazing part of each day for me. I always tell our new families that although we are a large elementary school, we have a small school atmosphere. Our students, staff and volunteers make every effort to promote a spirit of kindness and collaboration at all times.

I am excited about the many positive changes that have happened at Harding School over the past few years. These include new Math and Language Arts Programs as well as a new Writing Program which will begin this fall. In addition, we have programs to help students who are struggling which run before and after school and have also recently taken charge of our Before and After School Child Care Program. Rounding out some of our changes is our Peaceful Playgrounds campaign which has greatly improved the recess experience of our students. I have to thank our Administrative Team and teachers for a lot of hard work to make these changes a successful reality for our school. In addition, I’d like to offer a huge thank you to Mr. Bubnowski, our Assistant Principal who works each day not only on the aforementioned initiatives but also in so many ways as he displays a tireless work ethic to make our school a better place.

This year marks my 17th year as a principal. Before that, I served as an Assistant Principal for one year and as a classroom teacher for 15 years, all in the elementary school setting. I attended Kean University for both my undergraduate and graduate education. I feel I was born to be an educator. It was always my dream to be a teacher. I started coaching basketball in my teens and never stopped teaching since.

I‚Äčn my spare time, I love to exercise and get outside as much as possible. Over the years I have studied Taekwondo where I achieved my 3rd Degree Black Belt and also coached. I also enjoy kickboxing, Zumba, and most recently yoga. I am also an avid reader of fiction and biographies.

I am known for my quotes around school, so in closing I will share a personal favorite.

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”  William Butler Yeats

My mission each day is to inspire the Harding School family to do their very best to reach their dreams. I remain grateful to have the chance to do so.
